The McBee Elementary School is a new school undertaken as a joint effort by an association of three architectural firms: WSM+Parshall+SGB. Based on prototypical floor plans, McBee’s design was a collaborative effort by the three firms, with Parshall + Associates Architects as the lead designer of the interior and Construction Administration.
The prototypical plans allowed us to meet a very demanding schedule of four and one half months from inception to a 95% complete set to be used for pricing by the Construction Manager. The ten-acre site was substandard in size compared to other new elementary schools. The team was challenged in site planning to locate the school district’s program, both building and playing fields. We were able to accommodate all the program needs logically and safely. The interior was envisioned as a playful space for the children. We used common materials in unique ways to accomplish this. The Library also kept to this goal by creating a puppet stage and tiered seating. The Library also features a built-in reading window bench. We worked closely with the Head Librarian to provide for the requirements of shelving and furniture. We exceeded the minimum amount of linear feet of shelving the Librarian required within the confines of their standard sized library.
